Reaction Paper on the Filipino Is Worth Dying for

â€Å"The Filipino is worth dying for† This simple yet powerful statement, attributed to Benigno â€Å"Ninoy† S. Aquino, Jr., is one of the most popular quotes in Philippine society. It is quoted by great statesmen in their speeches, it is reprinted on thousands of t-shirts – but in truth, Ninoy never said this, at least not verbatim. The full text of this statement, which Ninoy delivered before the Asia Society on August 4, 1980 in New York City, goes deeper than the oft-quoted truncated version implies. Consider the concept of te, or moral force, here. The Sheng seems to rely upon this type of force to establish goodness. Book VII, Chapter 7 is important because of the ideological aspersion of Confuciuss claim to take on students regardless of their ability to pay him. At various points in the text when discussing the gentleman, or Chun-tzu, Confucius makes a distinction between the gentleman and common people. This can be read to infer a class-based difference between the two groups, but Confuciuss statement here indicates that this was not the case. His belief that knowledge and learning could allow even the poor to elevate themselves to a higher moral stature illustrates that he did not see a persons background as an indication of their future. Confucius himself came from a poor family and at various points in the text comments on how his outsider status caused some to view him with suspicion. The Prisoner Who Wore Glasses My personal response is based on the story the Prisoner Who Wore Glasses written by Bessie Head. When I first read this story, I immediately realized some of the main points of the text such as political imprisonment and theft. However, the concept of help brought up the topic of how some Colleges do not allow students to get help or do a collaboration between students. 2. Market share of Macintosh peaked at slightly more than 10% in the early 1990s and has since tapered to between 2-3%. The IBM PC and its clones became the standard due to the success of the open nature of the PC. This allows product developers to offer vastly more products for the platform. Some argue that not licensing the Mac OS was a mistake. Although digital music sales are growing rapidly, the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) states that digital sales account for only 4% of all music sales. Borland) Analysts at Forrester (Bartiromo) and Gartner (Bruno) validate this. Apple’s sales are between 66% and 75% of downloads and 80% of music players. (Bruno) Apple is part to a suit alleging monopolistic practices concerning their market share dominance of players and downloads. (Grundner) The other players in the download market are (the revised) Napster, Yaho o Music, Rhapsody, and illegitimate file-sharing services. Portable music players competing with the iPod include those made by Creative, Samsung, iRiver, and Sony. A major point of contention between these services and player manufacturers is the control of a variety of incompatible Digital Rights Management (DRM) schemes. The Future of Apple Personal Computers – A Shift in Strategy Apple has historically taken a far different path than the traditional Windows and Intel combination. Microsoft provides the Windows operating system to separate downstream hardware producers such as Dell. Apple vertically integrated both the operating system software and hardware completely under Apple. A consumer running Microsoft Windows can choose from a myriad of systems based on the Intel processor, while a consumer running Apple’s OS X must purchase Apple hardware. Analysts believe that the Intel-based Macintosh may be able to run Microsoft Windows applications by the end of 2006. (Burrows) In addition to switching processors, Apple positioned their computers as an immediate option for the traditional Microsoft Windows user. With Apple Boot Camp, users may now use Mac OS X or Windows on an Apple computer. Apple may steal away customers that are willing to pay a premium for a system that runs both Windows and Mac OS X. Past attempts at licensing Apple technology (to IBM, Gateway, and others) failed on accord of Apple’s rigid demands. Many technology leaders (such as a 1985 letter by Bill Gates to Apple CEO John Sculley) criticized Apple for keeping a closed architecture. Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak criticizes this strategy, â€Å"We had the most beautiful operating system, but to get it you had to buy our hardware at twice the price. That was a mistake. † (Linzmayer, 245-57) Whether Apple would be willing to pursue this reversal of vertical integration is unclear. Although such a move would cannibalize a portion of Apple’s own hardware sales, it would also provide royalty-based revenue that could approach $1 billion annually. (Burrows) Jobs traditionally sided against licensing Apple technology. He referred to Mac clone producers as â€Å"leeches† and he personally killed Power Computing (a Mac clone producer) by terminating their license in 1997. (Linzmayer, 255) Apple in the Living Room Apple’s iPod and iTunes are a powerful combination that fosters a network style of increasing returns. (Barney, 124) By selling iPods, Apple increases the consumer demand for music from iTunes. By placing more musical choices on iTunes (including less popular songs that appeal to niche audiences), there is more demand for iPods. Apple had 70% of the legal music download market in early 2005. (Yoffie) Apple is shooting for the digital living room of the future. For example, Apple just released a â€Å"boom box† portable version of the iPod. This iPod (the iPod Hi-Fi) comes with a remote control. Instead of forming a strategic alliance, Apple engineered the iPod Hi-Fi and designed it with high-fidelity features. (Burrows) Apple is clearly trying to develop a stronger core competency in the entertainment area. (Burrows) This product would again position Apple as a â€Å"second mover† responding to Palm’s Treo and Verizon’s VCAST technology. Strategic Alliances and Entertainment Jobs had the early strategic vision to complement computing with movie entertainment. After founding NeXT, he personally acquired a majority interest in the young movie company Pixar in February 1986. (Linzmayer, 219) Jobs went on to invest ? of his personal wealth into Pixar. In 1995, Pixar solidified its position within animated movies with the debut of Toy Story. Grossing $358 million worldwide, it became the 3rd-largest grossing animated movie in history. (Linzmayer, 222) After this success, Jobs took Pixar public and negotiated far better terms with Disney. Later successes included Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc. , and Finding Nemo. Ironically, Jobs stated in the November 23, 1998Business Week, â€Å"I Think Pixar has the opportunity to be the next Disney – not replace Disney – but be the next Disney. † (Linzmayer, 222-4) The alliance between Pixar and Disney has remendous potential for economies of scope. As CEO of Apple and Disney’s largest shareholder, Jobs is the strategic link between Disney, Page 20 of 54 [pic][pic] Apple, and Pixar. Opportunities include combining the animated movie expertise of Disney and Pixar, as well as sharing the content of Disney’s ABC or ESPN networks over Apple’s digital offerings. (Burrows, Grover, and Green) A current example of the fusion between Disney, Jobs, Apple, and technology is video on the iPod. Disney’s Desperate Housewives was one of the first television programs available for purchase and download to the newer video-enabled iPod. There are concerns about whether these synergies will come to fruition. There are fears that the personality and style of Jobs may conflict with Disney, and that Disney CEO Iger could be â€Å"Amelioed† — driven out of office by Jobs in a manner similar to how Jobs drove Amelio out of the CEO post at Apple. (Burrows, Grover, and Green) EXTERNAL ANALYSIS Technological Environment Brand Awareness – Style at a Premium Apple’s products are trendy and stylish. After Jobs returned in 1997, Apple retained designer Jonathan Ive to differentiate their computers from the typical beige box. Ive’s design of the iMac included clear colorful cases that distinguished Apple computers. (Linzmayer, 295-6) Apple’s iPod (with the trademark white ear buds and simple track wheel) commands a 15%-20% premium over other MP3 players. (Yoffie) Apple and Pixar limit the number of computer products and movies that they sell. Although the Mac Mini is a base model with few features, it comes encased in a very small and distinctive package. Apple portrays this computer as â€Å"Small is Beautiful†. (Apple) Likewise, the iPod Shuffle was Apple’s first entry into the lower-end ($100 range) of flash- memory-based portable music players. Interoperability Although Apple competes directly with Microsoft for operating systems, the release of iTunes for Windows in 2002 was a key strategic move. This decision expanded the potential customer base to nearly all personal computer owners, even though Apple only has 2%-3% of all personal computer sales. (Yoffie) Conversely, Apple depends on Microsoft for a version of Microsoft Office. As the most widely used office suite of applications, Macintosh users rely on Office to correspond with companies that standardized on Windows. This is from a strategic alliance between Apple and Microsoft after Jobs returned in 1997. For example, Apple sued Microsoft in 1988 (settled in 1997 for an undisclosed amount) for perceived similarities between Microsoft Windows and Macintosh audiovisual works. Linzmayer, 172-4) Microsoft has generally been the focus for government antitrust charges (such as U. S. v. Microsoft) (US DOJ, 2006). Both federal and state governments assert that Microsoft’s dominance blocked fair competition within the software industry. This is an advantage for Apple, because its operating systems are a vi able substitute for Windows. Furthermore, Microsoft’s continued support for Office for Macintosh reduces the perceived level of market monopoly and abuse. My Favourite City New York

Question: Write a paragraph about your favorite city in this weeks ? Answer: New York is my favourite city for many reasons. The city has its own reputation, three of which are highlighted. Firstly, the scenic beauty of the city is at its peak, especially during autumn. The most beautiful fall foliage destinations across the city are in the hikes, waters, drives, high points and city sights. I love Manhattan which is the most crowded borough in New York City. The ancient buildings and activities for all age groups makes New York my favourite city. A large number of restaurants and bars make it an amazing experience for the local people as well as tourists. Secondly, the lifestyle of people is fast paced and busy. The people want to reach as fast as possible. The vibrant culture and various ethnicities make New York the best city. The shows at Times Square or Manhattan theatre are the most famous places. The true feel of New York City is felt in the bars, clubbing, drinking and karaoke. New Yorkers enjoy amenities if they have upper-income group. Thirdly, the nature of people is cheerful and joyous that makes it all lively around. New York people are smarter than any city I have been in. The perception of people being New Yorkers being rude is not totally justified. They do not hesitate in a person out in case of an inappropriate behaviour. Your Future in 180 Minutes Exam Everyone has the right to education and base on merit, higher education should be made available to everybody. In fact, international law recognized access to higher education as the universal human right but states over-emphasis on individual academic performance and aptitude exam denied many students of such right. YGS is Turkey’s 3 hours, 160 questions multiple-choice Transition To Higher Education Examination. The score from this exam determines which course a high school graduate should take in college. Critics of YGS argue that the 180 minutes exam is unfair. One reason according to TED or Turkish Education Association is that YGS is trying to cover all the knowledge students acquired from his or her 12 years of education through 180 minutes multiple-choice exam. Another is the fact that instead of increasing the capacity of universities, the examination limits people from getting a college education. Normalizing Exclusion of Students from Higher Education There are about 2 million high school graduates took the YGS examination this year and many of these students have difficulties  solving math questions (see How to solve Math problems), and very long  reading comprehension questions. High School graduates who will be lucky enough to pass YGS can proceed to college while the unfortunate ones can only apply for associate degree programs. HOW TO GET GOOD GRADES Problems with the transition from secondary to higher education are not unique to Turkey. In Ireland for instance, transition exams led to the development of teaching and learning centers that many believed narrowed students focus on education towards exam preparation and exam success rather than engaging in teaching and the learning process. It promotes the type of knowledge asked in the exam. It instills negative values that getting a college education is simply a matter of answering as many questions as you can. More importantly, such exams normalized the exclusion of students from higher education. Graduates Right to Benefit from Higher Education Graduates of secondary education should be allowed to pursue higher education according to their interest and ability. Historically, inequality in access to higher education is political and educational policy issue. According to OECD or the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the Matriculation Examination system, a yearly exam often administered by the Ministry or Department Education of member countries, is an impediment to economic development. The pass/fail system in particular significantly reduced the number of students who can go to college and increased the number of people without formal education. In Myanmar for example, out the 469,000 high school graduates who took the Matriculation Exam, only 35% passed the exam. By analysis, the exam forced about 300,000 teenagers to move away from the education system and find work with secondary education certificate as highest qualification. Higher education appears to be a possibility rather than rights as the majority of secondary school graduates had difficulties in passing transition exams. Similarly, higher education is also not according to individual wishes or field of interest because exam passers’ college courses are dependent on their respective exam scores. Moreover, as transition or matriculation exam is the only route to higher education, secondary school graduates are likely to enter the informal sector or work illegally as minors in formal enterprises. The Four Different ResearchTheories & Differences and Similarities between theory and hypothesis - Assignment Example In the process of criminal research there are many things to consider in teaching people on criminal justice research. Key Differences between the Research Theories In this section, a generalization of the four theories will be given to gain a basic understanding of each one. Deductive reasoning takes general information and gives it a particular instance. An example of this kind of reasoning can be dogs sleep twelve hours a day. Understanding that this may be true for one dog, it can be concluded that that is also true for all dogs based on the fact that they have the same biology. Inductive reasoning involves taking well detailed facts and applying them to general principles. An example could be that all cows are spotted. Another example could be that every day the sun rises in the morning and sets in the evening. It can be said to be a simplified version of facts such as location, speed and viewpoints (Ireland, Berg & Mutchnick, 2010).... Grounded theory is a methodology that is systematic involving coming up with a theory from data that is gathered and available. It is mainly used when doing qualitative research, even though it can be applicable for quantitative data. In other words it is the scientific method that has been reversed. One starts by collec ting data in a variety of ways first then from the data gathered a hypothesis is proposed. Using the axiomatic research theory, the system is made up of any set of axioms or postulate in coming up with a proposition that has not been demonstrated or proven but is considered to be self evident or is known to be true without any proof. From this all or some of the axioms can be used together to come up with logically derived theorems. In other words the data is taken to be factual without having to necessarily prove it (Hagan, 2009). Which theory is more valid? Looking at the four theories the grounded theory can be considered to be more valid based on the methodology it uses. To achieve this, the UK tax system first needs to merge income tax and National insurance. These are two different ways in which income tax are paid in UK. Maintaining the two types of tax systems may be costly, less transparent and burdensome. Integrating the two systems will therefore bring forth an easier method of paying in come tax in UK. The integration of income tax with National insurance contribution makes it more transparent for the tax system. The progressive taxation in UK includes 20% basic rate, 40% higher rate and 50% additional rate of income tax (Mirrlees et al, 2012). If this income tax is integrated with National Insurance Contribution, the new rates may be 31%, 41% and 51% respectively. This is a more transparent mechanism which enables individuals to pay for their taxes more easily at once rather than maintaining two separate tax accounts. The second step in the integration of benefit and tax systems is the integration of the benefit system. In this case, the benefit and tax credit systems are merged together. This is a messy and complicated mix of overlapping programmes. The programmes which need to be include programmes needed to provide support for low-income families and benefits provided to give non-means-tested support for various contingencies. The former class of programmes inc ludes job-seekers allowance, income support, housing benefit, pension credit, child tax credit and council tax benefit. K-pop, also known as Korean Pop Music, is a musical genre containing electronic, hip hop, pop, rock and R&B music originating from South Korea. K-pop started in the early 1990s and grew from a musical genre into a subculture among teenagers and adults throughout East and Southeast Asia in the late 2000s. In 1957, American music started influencing Korean Music which led to many comparing the two genres together. Ever since Korean artist Psy has taken the world by storm with his single "Gangnam Style", K-pop is becoming more globally recognized. Many people are new to the genre K-pop and try to compare it to American pop music. Although there are some similarities, there are major differences between the two. K-pop is often critique for misusing English words in its lyrics and having meaningless song titles. Many k-pop songs have simple and repetitive lyrics that make little to no grammatical sense. K-pop also throws in a lot of English phrases into their songs and sometimes it is misused causing parts of the song to not make sense. My interviewee, Tina, played a few k-pop songs that had English phrases in it that didn’t make much sense. One of the songs was â€Å"Mama† by Exo. There was a phrase in the song that went â€Å"Careless, careless. Shoot anonymous, anonymous. Heartless, mindless. No one. Who care about me?† and I had no idea what this meant. When I first listened to it, I thought it was silly and random but the next day after the interview, I found myself singing the lyrics to the song. Tina was telling me this is the power of k-pop. Even though the lyrics and English phrases don’t make sense, the beat is catchy enough to make you sing along to it. â€Å"Another song I didn’t like when I first listened to was Bar Bar Bar by Crayon Po... .... The song â€Å"Swagger Jagger† is about somebody who steals somebody else’s style. I found the lyrics kind of full of herself and very self-centered because she think people are stealing her style and declaring hate on them. While Crayon Pop’s song was about inspiring people to have fun. The lyrics to â€Å"Swagger Jagger† were somewhat sending a message to all her haters who stole her unique style I don’t think this song sends a good message because it’s essentially telling people it’s alright to hate. There was no real choreography during the entire concert. She just walked back and forth around the stage. There were times when she would start jumping to get the crowd hyped up and shook people’s hand but there was no real dancing throughout the concert. I was not into the performances as much as I was with Crayon Pop. The music was good but it wasn’t as fun and enjoyable.
